Technet UK – Manchester IT Camp
First 2 day camp is done and it was good fun., fast paced, and very interactive. Andrew, Simon and Alex have these camps well mastered, with less then 30 minutes of power points to be seen during the course of the 2 days. The content is very much driven by the attendees, right down to the point that Andrew and Simon are like the new generation Rolf Harris, drawing images on paper as they depict on the screen for everyone in great detail how everything gel’s – It is very refreshing. Day 1 we covered in great detail virtualisation, of course primarily focused on Hyper-V; but this time from the ground up; with every attendee armed with their personal laptops, we introduced Virtual hard disks, their usage scenarios and their different types. following the idea od...
MMS 2012 Take Away
What a great week, MMS 2012 is clearly one to be remembers with the official launch of System Centre 2012, and a peek into the future. The week was very long starting every morning with breakfast meetings at 7am, following through with 5 additional presentations normally ending at 5.15pm. After the presentations completed, we then moved into focus topics (these were called Birds of a Feather sessions), discussing @ level 200-400 both solutions and issues, lasting anywhere from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours. The evenings were then booked for parties, which were normally invite only, and pre-arranged; these were either customer of group focused, and offered opportunities for some selling, but more so, access to the architects behind some of the world’s most interesting...

Win8 Tip: Unsecure SMB shares
With all the focus now on SMB2.2 Microsoft have snuck a nasty little change into the builds which now REQUIREs that all SMB connections are secured. This is not a problem as long as your SMB stroage offers up a secure connection, however there are many Linux devices, and NAS devices (Including Hitachi HNAS) which will not co-opperate, and you will be greated with a meager reply stating that your not welcome. As normal a fix is not to hard, and in this case, its a registry setting on the computer, turning off the requirement for secure connections; atleast until your targets all fall into line. Keeping it simple the following PS command from an Elevated shell will do the trick Set-ItemProperty -Path...
Win8 Tip: .NET 2.0 and 3.5
On the current builds of Windows 8, the .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.5 require a special process to install, as the the binaries are not copied into the SXS folders during installation. Thankfully this is an easy fix as long as you have access to the installation media, using the DISM command dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /Source:F:sourcessxs Be sure to replace F:sourcesxs with the path to your installation...
